Buying Magazines: Is It Worth It To Subscribe For Home Delivery? By Jeff Lakie When trying to decide whether to buy in a store or from a sidewalk stand, or to have them sent through the mail as a subscription, many of us are not sure which way to go. The convenience of getting them sent to us every month in the mail certainly has its own obvious advantages. But there is also something special and fun about buying that we read on the fly – as impromptu impulse purchases that we snag as we are about to go through a checkout line at the local grocery store.
One thing to consider – a factor that probably influences more than half of the decisions made regarding subscriptions – is that most offer huge discounts to those who subscribe for a year or more at a time. They do this because once they have your annual payment, it is easier for the magazine companies themselves
to project their annual income. They have a guaranteed source of basic subscription memberships, and they can build the magazine based on that revenue, while enhancing it and improving it by using the revenue that comes from other non-subscribing customers. In exchange for this advantage, the magazine is willing to offer much lower prices. After all, the cost of producing is usually based on how much it costs to produce a certain number of them, and after than initial baseline goal is met, the magazine can bank everything else as profits.
So if you subscribe to a magazine, you will get preferential treatment. The publication will not only give you the for as much as 50 to 75 percent of the actual book store or grocery store price, but they will also incur the cost of the postage required to mail the issues to you. And if you don’t go out shopping much or you live in a remote area where it is hard to get the particular you enjoy reading, this can be a big perk for a subscriber. And you will normally get the magazine issues mailed to you at least a week before they hit the stands. That means that by the time the general buying public sees the cover of the new magazine, you have already had time to read the whole thing.
On the other hand, if you don’t always read every issue, and only buy randomly, you may be better off just buying on impulse. There is no need to fork over money for a whole year if you are only interested in reading the once or twice every few months.
